a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials allow students to become exposed to real life materials of language, which is
used in everyday English-speaking countries, they serve as a reminder that English will not always
be adjusted for easy understanding. Authentic text can also introduce more advanced students to
new vocabulary and enhance their pronunciation of more difficult words and phrases. Some topics
can also be written in different ways depending on the writer, which will enhance students learning
experience with the different ways native speakers express themselves in articles.
The language used in authentic text can be very useful to non-native speaking students because
students can test themselves to see if they are able to read and understand what exactly is being
said. It’s also very useful for students planning to work in an English-speaking country as authentic
text will prepare them to recognize formal and informal language and which to use in a business or
school environment.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
The authentic text I chose (Reducing Emissions to Lessen Climate Change Would Yield Dramatic Health
Benefits by 2030) was not only for the appropriate writing style and vocabulary but also to educate
more advanced students on more than just language. Global warming and climate change are
everyday topics on news channels, newspapers and can be an interesting topic to discuss with any
English-speaking person. There are no bias opinions, racial or cultural references in this text
making it a good option for any student from any country, the topic of global warming and climate
change will also still be very relevant in the next years to come.
The text introduces some new vocabulary to advanced students which are not used in everyday
conversations. The 12 vocabulary items that I highlighted are most likely not words that they are
already familiar with, and it will help these students with new pronunciation, understanding and
knowledge of the topic and language use.
