ACT 1: SCENE 1
⬧ A ship carrying Alonso (the king of Naples), Ferdinand (the king's son), Sebastian (the
king's brother), Gonzalo (the king's advisor) and Antonio (the current duke of Milan) is
returning from Tunis (where Alonso's daughter, Claribel, married the king of Tunis) and
is caught in a storm.
⬧ The boatswain shouts at the nobles to either help or remain below deck.
⬧ The nobles are offended by the boatswain - especially Antonio and Sebastian.
⬧ Everyone, the sailors included, fears that they will perish.

ACT 1: SCENE 2
⬧ It appears that the storm was ordered by Prospero.
⬧ Prospero's daughter, Miranda, fears for the lives of those on the ship, but Prospero
says that no one was harmed.
⬧ Prospero tells Miranda why he caused the storm: due to his brother Antonio's betrayal.
⬧ Antonio, with King Alonso's help, stole Prospero's dukedom while Prospero was
obsessed with his studies.
⬧ Prospero and Miranda were taken from Milan in the dead of night and set adrift on a
leaky boat.
⬧ Thanks to Gonzalo they had food, water, clothing and Prospero's books.
⬧ They landed on the island.
⬧ Ariel, a spirit in Prospero's employ, arrives. He caused the storm and has dispersed the
nobles around the isle whilst putting the sailors to sleep aboard the ship, which has
been docked safely.
⬧ Ariel asks to be liberated from Prospero's service. [Prospero rescued him from
Sycorax, the witch and he is indebted to Prospero.]
⬧ Prospero calls Caliban - his slave and Sycorax's son. Their mutual dislike is very
noticeable
⬧ When Prospero first came to the island, Caliban taught him how to survive and they
respected each other.
⬧ Miranda taught Caliban how to speak

, ⬧ Caliban tried to sexually assault Miranda to people the isle with his offspring and this
marked the end of any civility.
⬧ Prospero enslaved Caliban and controls him by inflicting pain on him by means of his
magical powers
⬧ Prospero sends Caliban off to find wood.
⬧ Ariel enters, leading Ferdinand (the king's son) with a song which tells that Alonso has
drowned.
⬧ Miranda sees Ferdinand and thinks he is a spirit as she has only ever seen two men:
Prospero and Caliban
⬧ Ferdinand mistakes Miranda for a goddess.
⬧ Ariel causes Miranda and Ferdinand to fall in love and Prospero promises him his
freedom for this and for carrying out his next commands.
⬧ Prospero plans to make their romance a little difficult by taking Ferdinand as a
prisoner, since things too easily obtained are often undervalued.
⬧ Miranda tries to defend Ferdinand, who is happy to be imprisoned as long as he can
be near Miranda.
