RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
Definition:
A RELATION is a rule that associates elements of one set of numbers with elements of
another set.
e.g. Here the relation is: "squared"
1 1
2 4
3 9
This kind of representation of a relation is called a "Mapping Diagram".
The Components of a Relation
A RELATION can be thought of as having 3 components.
1. An INPUT set (the "DOMAIN") of independently chosen elements.
2. An OUTPUT set (the "RANGE") of whose elements which depend on the domain
values.
3. A RULE for transforming the members of the domain into the members of the
range.

Other ways of representing relations are:
1. A table:
natural multiples of
numbers three
1 3
2 6
3 9
4 12 The Rule is:
5 15
