Woordorde


STOMPI is a template or shortcut to understanding Afrikaans word order in sentences. It is an
acronym with different types of words.




Subject:
● Can usually stand on its own and usually at the beginning of a sentence. It is what the
sentence revolves around.
● Answers the who/what question

Verb1
● The first verb in a sentence
● Divided into two groups:
○ Present Tense: the main verb of the sentence and there is no second verb (het,
moes, kon)
○ Past and Future Tense: the first verb is the helping/auxiliary verb (moet, kan, sal)

Time:
● Any indication of time
● Answers the When question

Object:
● It is what something is being done to
● Answers what the verb is doing to the subject

Manner:
● It is an adjective
● Answers the how question

Place:
● Answers the where question
● It always has a preposition (voor, in, op)

Verb2:
● The second verb in a sentence
● The main verb in past and future tense
● Present tense does not have a second verb
● The second verb gets a ge- in front of it in past tense

Infinitive:
● Answers the why question
● Everything from the word combination om...te… to the end of the sentence



Questions to ask yourself to help identify the parts of STOMPI:

1. Subject - Wie/Wat het iets gedoen?
2. Time - Wanneer het die seun iets gedoen?
3. Object - Wat het die seun geskop?
4. Manner - Hoe het die seun geskop?
5. Place - Waar het die seun geskop?
6. Infinitive - Hoekom het hy dit gedoen?
