SECTION A: Design Literacy
Question 1: The Design Process
Ideation phase - the mode of the design process in which you concentrate on idea
generation and solutions
● Identify need/problem/opportunity
● Brief from Client
What does it contain?
- Research
- Sketches
- Prototypes
- Brainstorming
- Brainwriting
- Inspiration
- Other ideation techniques
What do you discuss with the client?
- The problem
- What the client wants
Concept phase - Where your ideas are nurtured from first thought into a viable project
● Investigate context of design problem and different approaches
● Collect, analysis, organise, interpret, acknowledge relevant info
● Idea development
, What does it contain?
- Development of ideas
- Sketches
- Mind maps
What do you discuss with the client?
- Colour schemes
- Budget (this determines size)
Development phase - The schematic plans and elevations are reviewed, revised and
expanded to incorporate all the details and specifications required for construction.
Project components are looked at to the smallest detail
(Idea into real life situation)
● Investigate appropriate materials and production techniques
● Product samples/prototypes
● Evaluate and suggest improvements
● Select best idea/solution
What does it contain?
- Fabric and material selection and sampling
- Construction methods
Production phase - The stage where the product or design is made
● Produce product/service
● Reflect on end result
-
Exhibition phase - When the final design is created and exhibited to the public
● Exhibiting design
THE PROCESS THE CLIENT
- Identify - Brief
- Plan - Schedule
- Gain knowledge - Context
- Experiment - Ideas
- Best option - Materials
- Prototype - Production techniques
- Production - Evaluation
- Presentation - Production
