, CELL
There are three facts about cells, in fact, let’s highlight the Modern Cell Theory.
✓ Cells are basic units of life, present in all organisms
✓ All living things are made up of cells
✓ All cells come from pre-existing cells
Cells can be classified as prokaryotes (single cell, e.g. Amoeba) or Eukaryotes
(has many different cells, e.g. plants and animals). Alternatively, unicellular (one
cell) and multicellular (many cells). Remember this!!!
1.PROKARYOTES (e.g. Bacteria and Protists)
Cell wall (for protection)
Cell membrane (semi-permeable, controls the
entry and exit of substances in & out of the cell)
Strand of DNA (for genetic information)
Cytoplasm (for chemical reactions) and
ribosomes (site for protein synthesis)
Plasmid (antibiotic resistance)
Flagella (to propel the cell)
Figure 1: An overview of a bacterial cell.
Facts to remember about prokaryotes
✓ No membrane bound organelles
✓ No true nucleus
