,Phase 1 – Project Specifications
Problem summary:
The students at Cornwall Hill College are having a hard time managing their time. As Cornwall requires
you to do a sport or culture. This leads to the problem that students to have to balance school life,
academic life, sports and culture as well as down time to friends and family.
The school councillors have had an influx of students seeking their aid as the students are becoming ever
more anxious and their stress levels are rising. The school counsellors have found that the main problems
are that the students do not know how to manage their time; they are not using this time effectively and
they do not have enough time for the recommended amount of sleep.
At this current point in time, there is no effective way for students to plan their schedule. After talking to
various students, it has become apartment that students have a hard time with their clashing sports and
cultural activities. Some students have overlapping activities (such as rugby starting as debating ends.).
This leads to them worrying too much about how they would get from one rather than more important
things such as schoolwork. After interviewing some students, there were two cases that stood out. First,
one student said that because he was stressed out by running between activities, he completely forgot he
had a physics and chemistry test the next day and nearly failed the test. Another student said he often
had to skip his sports activities as he forgot about his school projects until the day before it was due. This
led to him missing important information during the practice which cost his team dearly.
After these interviews, it is clear that students needs a better way to manage their schedule and see
when they need to get all their work done by. This will also allow the students to if they have enough
time for all their activities.
Specification of programme function:
My proposed solution to this problem is to create a desktop application to assist the students with
managing their day to day lives. This will include managing their sports activities, their cultural activities
and their school subjects. With this, the program will generate a timetable of upcoming events for
students.
The system will ask the subjects user to list their subjects. After this, they can select their sports and
cultural activities from a pre-set list of activities. The programme will not allow you to choose activities
that run in the same time slot. From this information, it will generate a timetable for you for your
upcoming events. The timetable will include time show the user when each subject has a test or
assignment, will show sports training time per sport cultural practice times.
Admin user (teachers/staff):
Admin users will be able to do the following:
• Add a sport/ cultural activity if they are in charge of the activity
• Update times or cancel practices or events for sports or cultural activities if they are in
charge of the activity
• Add projects and tests as well as their due dates if they are in charge of the subject
• View and edit which students are enrolled in what subject/sport activity/cultural event.
• Change admin passwords but not their username/user number.
Students
Students will be able to do the following:

, • View their existing timetable
• Create a new timetable (only one timetable will exist per user at any given time).
• Change their passwords but not their username/user number.
User interface
Overview of user interface.
Login screen:
From the login screen, users will be able to type in their unique username and password. They
will then be taken to one of three home screens based on which group they belong to (teachers,
sports coaches, or students)
Teachers screens:
From the login screen, teachers will be taken to teacher main menu screen. From here they will
have the following option:
• Change password
o If they select this option, they will be taken to a screen where they can change
their password. To do this, they must enter their old password into a ‘Old
Password’ textbox. They can then change their password by entering the new
password under a ‘New Password’ textbox and confirm it by entering it into a
‘Confirm New Password’ textbox.
• Add new tests and assignments
o If they select this option, they will be able to add a new test or assignment. To
do this, they will first have to select if it will be a test or an assignment from a
dropdown menu. They will then have to enter the name of the test/assignment
into a textbox titled ‘Test/Assignment Name’. They will then need to add a date
for the test/assignment to take place on in a textbox titled ‘Date of
Test/Assignment’. Lastly, they must enter a description of the test/assignment
in a textbox titled ‘Description of Test/Assignment’
