, MASTER ESSAY 1 — DORIAN'S CORRUPTION AND DOWNFALL
Possible question
Dorian Gray's moral corruption and eventual downfall result from the
influence of others as well as his own choices. Critically discuss.
Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray traces Dorian's transformation from
an innocent and impressionable young man into a morally corrupt individual.
Although Basil Hallward and Lord Henry influence his development, Dorian
cannot escape responsibility for his own choices. His downfall results from the
combination of vanity, destructive influence, hedonism and his repeated
refusal to accept moral responsibility.
Initially, Dorian is presented as youthful and innocent. Basil's excessive
admiration first makes him conscious of his extraordinary beauty. Basil virtually
worships him and immortalises his appearance in the portrait. However, Lord
Henry has the more dangerous influence. His belief that youth and beauty are
life's greatest treasures terrifies Dorian with the prospect of ageing.
Consequently, Dorian wishes that the portrait should grow old while he
remains young. This wish marks the beginning of his obsession with preserving
his physical appearance.
Lord Henry continues to influence Dorian by encouraging pleasure and self-
indulgence. Nevertheless, Dorian is not simply an innocent victim. His
relationship with Sibyl Vane demonstrates his developing selfishness. He loves
her primarily because of her talent as an actress. When genuine love causes
her acting to deteriorate, he rejects her cruelly. After her suicide, the portrait
changes, revealing the first visible sign of his moral corruption. Although Dorian
initially feels remorse, Lord Henry persuades him to view Sibyl's death
aesthetically rather than morally. Dorian chooses to accept this interpretation.
His corruption deepens after Lord Henry gives him the yellow book. Fascinated
by its decadent lifestyle, Dorian pursues increasingly excessive pleasures. The
portrait bears the consequences while his face remains youthful, allowing him
to maintain a respectable public image. This separation encourages him to
believe that he can sin without visible punishment.
Dorian's murder of Basil proves that his corruption eventually goes far beyond
Henry's influence. Basil urges him to repent, yet Dorian responds by killing the
very person who represents conscience and morality. He later blackmails Alan
