Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy Revision Guide: Term 2 (Paper 2)

This guide focuses on the “Space, Shape, and Measurement” and “Maps and Plans”
sections of the CAPS curriculum, which form the core of Paper 2.
1. Measurement: Perimeter, Area, and Volume

In Paper 2, measurement is often applied to real-world objects like water tanks, garden
beds, or packaging.

• Perimeter: The distance around the outside of a shape.

• Area: The space inside a 2D shape.

• Surface Area: The total area of all the faces of a 3D object (important for painting
or wrapping).

• Volume: The amount of space inside a 3D object (important for capacity/liquids).
Common Formulas to Know:

• Area of a Circle = 𝜋 × radius2 (Take 𝜋 ≈ 3.142)

• Volume of a Cylinder = 𝜋 × radius2 × height

• Surface Area of a Cylinder = 2 × 𝜋 × radius × (radius + height)
Problem 1: Water Tank Capacity A farmer uses a cylindrical JoJo tank to store
rainwater. The tank has a diameter of 2 m and a height of 2.5 m. 1.1 Calculate the radius
of the tank. 1.2 Calculate the volume of the tank in m3 (Use 𝜋 = 3.142). 1.3 Convert the
volume to liters (1 m3 = 1000 L).
