**Evolution is the process by which inherited characteristics of populations
change over generations**
What evidence do we have for evolution?
1) Fossils
2) Genetic and
3) Cultural
There are TWO main theorists when it comes to evolution:
Lamarck and Darwin
Lamarck
Lamarck explained evolution with 2 “laws”:
1) The inheritance of acquired characteristics – characteristics
developed over a lifetime, will be passed down to their offspring
, 2) The law of use and disuse – an organ/structure that is used more
often, will develop more than an organ/structure that is not used and
will shrink or disappear altogether
Application of Lamarck’s theory
Ask the following questions:
1. What were the original characteristics at the start?
2. What did the organism do?
3. Why did the organism do this?
4. What was the result?
5. What happened to the new characteristic?
6. What was the result of this?
Darwin
Charles Darwin explained evolution with natural selection.
*Natural selection states that:
1) there is a great variety amongst members of the same species
2) animals with favourable characteristics will survive
3) animals that do not have favourable characteristics will die off.
Application of Darwin’s theory
Ask the following questions:
1. What is the variation in the population?
2. What was the challenge?
3. What was the result of the challenge?
4. What happened to the favourable characteristic?
5. What was the result of this?
