Computers in our everyday lives
WHY DO WE USE COMPUTERS?
They improve efficiency, accuracy, reliability and communication

EFFECTIVENESS:
• Save time
• Reduce workload
• Save resources (paper)

RELIABLE:
• Are programmed to do the same tasks over and over again in a specific way.
• Don't get tired and stop working/do it halfway

ACCURACY:
• Accurate calculations so that the process can be carried out accurately.
• If the software and data that computers work with are of high quality, they are very accurate.

COMMUNICATION:
• No longer limited by time and distance (Zoom/ VoIP)
• Can communicate and exchange information globally and in different ways
• Cost-effective (for calling and sending documents)




TYPES OF COMPUTERS
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN COMPARING COMPUTERS
1. Power
• CPU (Central Processing Unit) speed – measured in GHz
• Amount of RAM
2. Use
• Server or client?
• For office work or pleasure (movies/games)?
3. Size and portability
• Laptop/ Tablet/ Smartphone
4. Software

NON-PORTABLE COMPUTERS
• Large and unportable (not made to be carried around)
• Consists of a system unit, keyboard and mouse

Types of non-portable computers:
1. Desktop computer
• Most common
• Available with different configurations.
