Set in 2540CE but known as 632AF(After Ford). They look at Henry Ford and his assembly
line as a god-like discovery. They even shout profanities like “Oh Ford” instead of “Oh God”.
The novel examines a futuristic society, called the World State, that revolves around science
and efficiency rather than emotions and relationships. In this society, emotions and
individuality are conditioned out of children at a young age, and there are no lasting
relationships because “every one belongs to every one else” (a common World State dictum).
The novel starts in the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where children are
created outside the womb and cloned in order to increase the population. There is a class
system of alpha, beta, delta, gamma and epsilons. Alphas are the smartest and top of the class
system. Embryos are sorted into the class systems and are incubated with hormones based on
their class. It is the “Social Predestination Room”. They restrict lower classes of oxygen and
feed them alcohol and hog’s stomach extract and foetal foal’s liver. They are also heat
conditioned. Epsilons are mature at age 10 their mind does not further develop. This is all
part of the Bokanovsky Process. “Bokanovsky’s Process is one of the major instruments of
social stability.” They are up to 96 identical twins but the goal is 72. They have electroshock
therapy to stop them from loving nature and culture and literature.
Children are encouraged in erotic play because in the past sexual repression had negative
effects on society. Mustapha Mond, the Resident Controller for Western Europe and one of
only ten World Controllers, describes to the children the time before the World State began its
policy of tight control over reproduction, and social relations. Lenina’s friend Frannie makes
sure Lenina sticks to polygamy. Lenina accepts Bernard’s offer to the Savage Reservation but
goes on a date with Henry Foster right after. Bernard visits his friend Helmholtz Watson, a
lecturer at the College of Emotional Engineering, who shares Bernard’s mutual dissatisfaction
with the status quo and the inclination to view himself as an individual. They both want to be
individuals and enjoy being alone.
Henry and Lenina play obstacle or electromagnetic golf.Bernard goes to the Solidarity
Service at the Fordson Community Singery, where a sex orgy occurs at the end, but this
leaves Bernard feeling more alienated than before. In chapter 6 Lenina and Bernard have sex
as she convinces him to have soma. Helmholtz goes to Bernard’s apartment to switch off his
scent tap and this is when he informs him that the Director is planning to exile Bernard. John
calls his father, the director “Tomakin”. John expresses his alienation growing up in the
Savage Reservation as his mother’s promiscuity caused this. Pope gave him Shakespeare
books. Bernard only invites them back to try embarrass the Director.
Mustapha Mond agrees that John and Linda are a matter of scientific interest to the world
state and further instructs Bernard to pick up the orders that will release John and Linda into
Bernard’s care. Meanwhile, John, finds Lenina passed out on soma. John wishes to touch her,
but holds himself back, not wanting to violate her.
Director wants Bernard to go to Iceland but resigns before then. Bernard’s popularity as the
guardian of the savage leads him to believe that he can flaunt his unorthodox behaviour as he
