How can data be stored on the RAM?

Data is stored on the RAM using capacitors (which either hold a charge - 1 - or don't - 0)

What happens when you do a binary left shift?

When doing a binary left shift, you MULTIPLY the original number by 2. For example, performing 2 left shifts multiplies the original number by 2x2.

How do you calculate how many characters a certain number of bits can have?

If you have n bits, you can have 2^n different characters. E.g. 8 bits = 2^8 characters = 256 characters.
