There are three main problems that are threatening modern society. There are people called boosters and knockers who are for and against modernity respectively.
1. Individualism (having right to choose own way of life)
2. Instrumental Reason (Maximum efficiency as a measure of success)
3. Soft despotism (political apathy)

The soft relativism of today is a mistake. Soft relativists are unable to engage in reasoned debate about their ideology. This chapter focuses on the first malaise (individualism) looking at the work of Bloom and how everyone has their own values and about these it is impossible to argue.
There is a huge link between relativism and individualism as both involve no objective morality and the values are based on self interested ideals rather than larger basis' such as religion or community.

Chapter 5 - The need for recognition
Society and relationships provide the context in which we develop our identity and find self fulfilment, therefore our identity requires recognition by others and we need to have shared HoS to give meaning to principles that are shared such as equality. Taylor believe there has been a collapse of social hierarchies meaning that only a small number of people can reach the highest levels of fulfilment. Identity is formed both when the other does and does not recognise it.
