What You Need to Know
Fractions can be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided.
Key Rules
Rule 1: Add/subtract → common denominator
Rule 2: Multiply → top × top, bottom × bottom
Rule 3: Divide → multiply by the reciprocal (flipped upside down)
Worked Example
A simple worked example illustrating the key concepts.
Question: 2/3 × 4/5
Solution: = (2 x 4) / (3 x 5) = 8/15
Question: 5/6 - 2/5
Solution: = Times the denominators (6 x 5 = 30)
To work out the numerator (5 x 5 ) - ( 6 x 2 ) = 25 - 12 = 13
Answer = 13/30
