In health and social care there are many professionals that support people with additional
needs. These professionals include a community learning disability nurse who is a specialist
in supporting people with learning disabilities as well as focusing on their family’s and any
staff teams that may be with them. They help them achieve a fulfilling life and to overcome
their issues having a learning disability. Another specialist is an occupational therapist whose
role is to help people improve their physical ability that has been affected by either an injury,
disability, or illness. They help people to perform daily tasks and to ensure a fulfilling life.
Another specialist is a physiotherapist who attend to the physical needs of an individual such
as sprains, back ache, arthritis and many more. They also use rehabilitation following this
surgery to ensure the patient has fully healed.

A psychiatrist another professional that supports people with additional needs. Their role is to
examine a person’s mental and physical aspects of a psychological problem that they may be
going through. This could be of a mental issue such as bipolar. Psychologists look at the
mental health issue such as depression to see how they can overcome it.

Social workers are professionals who support children and families to help them cope with
their problems that they live with every day. They can arrange and locate foster families and
adoptions. A speech and language therapist provides support and treatment for an individual
who has difficulties with communication and help to overcome issues like stammering. There
are also special needs teachers who work with students that have a form of learning, mental,
emotional or physical disability to help them adapt and teach educational lessons with various
teaching techniques.

Linking with the cases such as Ben. He would benefit from a speech and language therapist.
Due to his learning disability, he has issues with communicating, the speech and language
therapist will access his language skills and provide strategies such as Makaton to develop his
communication. This will help Ben learn to confidently communicate to other people
especially in his home setting and to form relationships. He may also benefit from a
community learning disability nurse. Because of his Down’s syndrome it a has led Ben to
have a moderate learning difficulty that affects him day to day. The nurse will assess his
needs to provide strategies such as photos to help him learn and communicate but to also
have one to one session with hi. This will increase his understanding of communication and
help him use the strategies provided. Ben may also benefit from a psychologist as he may be
concerned about his mental health die to his diabetes and that he could have a form of
depression. The psychologist will work one to one with him to detect the issue and to help
overcome this. This will make Ben aware of his mental health and that he needs to look after
himself more and to focus on not only his diet but his mental state.

Rebecca would benefit from an occupational therapist due to her accident leaving her
paralysed and bound to a wheelchair. The occupational therapist will access her injury and
help her cope with her physical disadvantage and perhaps help her get better. This will ensure
Rebecca to carry out normal daily activities and that she will be confident going out on her
own increasing her independence. She may also benefit from a psychiatrist as she could be
going through depression and anxiety from her physical disability. The psychologist will
focus on her physical and mental aspects to assess a coping mechanism which will help
