Module: Social Psychology

Week 11 seminar – Synoptic Assessment

You need to have a recording device in order to carry out the synoptic
assessment.

You are going to carry out a qualitative study where you will collect the
data which you will need it for another module in Semester 2
(Introduction to Research Methods).

You will be put into groups of 2 – 3 where you will both be a researcher
and a participant.

You can omit any questions you do not wish to answer – these are the
terms that you have to describe to participants in a study because you
have to give them the choice whether to answer a question or not as it is
part of the ethical process.

The interview will take no more than 5 minutes.

It is the responsibility of the interviewer to record the interview.

Afterwards, you are to open up Word Document and start transcribing it.
You must type out everything that was said in the interview and who was
saying it. You also need to include ‘ahhh’ and ‘ummm’ even if it’s not a
proper word.

So how did you find the process of conducting that interview?
It was probably simple and easy because we gave you the questions
and scenario. In the second year of your degree, you will be doing this
all by yourself. You will be interviewing each of your participants for 15 –
30 minutes, and so you will be doing a lot more transcribing.
