Unit 22: Rules, Regulations and Officiating in sport
Assignment 3

Feedback from peers:

After reviewing my own performance, I have received majority positive feedback and as this
was my first time doing linesman, I would think I have done well in certain areas but there is
always room for improvement. For example one positive feedback I received was that I
“showed good understanding of the rules throughout and was decisive with this”. I would say
this was one of my better aspects as I had a good knowledge of the game and rules and
applied it when it was necessary. For example when a player was fouled outside the box, I
flagged to show the referee that it was an unfair challenge which led to them receiving a free
kick. It was a good decision by me because the player could have gotten hurt if the game
proceeded, and giving them the advantage will show I'm fair and applying the rules correctly.
However something I needed to work on was dealing correctly with players not retiring the
correct distance. The feedback I received from this was not too good. I could have also
supported the referee with the flow of the game. To get the game moving quicker and better,
I could have told players where to go, what to do in order to prevent time being wasted.
Decision making was a bit slow but to improve I can work on my intelligence by reading
about the rules and regulations in football. To expand, my peers have said overall I did a
good job and the game was quite fair and treatment was given to both teams. When I
awarded offside during the game it was a good decision because it showed I had control of
the game and I wanted the game to run smoothly and quickly and also finish on time. From
the feedback I received, I would take it on board the next time I'm in this situation and will
learn to apply it in game situations.

Area of strength and improvements:

Throughout the game, I had a few areas of strengths where I acknowledged certain
situations, made correct decisions and allowed the game to flow. Out of the 5 areas I was
assessed on including: Application of the rules/laws, Control of the game, Effective use of
the scoring system, Ensuring health and safety of participants and relationship with others, I
would say I had good moments in each section however every strength comes with room for
improvement. Firstly, for application of the rules, I did quite well with a few errors including I
received a ⅘ for enforcing rules correctly or I applied laws correctly in relation to fair and
unfair physical challenges. This was quite good from me because knowing the laws is one of
the most important rules in football as I would need to know how to handle situations or deal
with them. For example it can be just looking at when the ball goes in and out of the play and
making the correct decision is huge as it can affect any team. This can benefit the control of
the game due to the fact if I made the incorrect decision, the players may become furious
which may lead to incidents and bad behaviour. Since I did this well, the game ended with
fair and reasonable decisions but to improve and receive full marks next time I can practise
officiating more regularly which will lead to continuous and better decisions and improve my
ability as a linemans. The comment I received for this section was that I showed a good
understanding of the rules throughout and I could have supported the referee with dissent
and flow of the game to improve. I understand this comment because often dissent took
