WGU C229 TASK 1 Social Media Campaign: Complete & Passed (2025/2026) C229 Task 1 Kim Brown Western Governors University  C229 Task 1 Social Media Campaign (B) Problem Description The primary prevention topic I chose to investigate is the prevention of homelessness through safe, affordable, and quality housing in Jefferson County, Colorado. My target population includes very low-income individuals and families, and low-income individuals and families. Every year, Jefferson County performs a Homelessness Survey. In 2016, Jefferson County had 208 homeless people counted in their survey; that number increased to 394 in 2017 (cityofarvada, 2017). Arvada, Colorado is suburb of Denver, Colorado located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The population of the city of Arvada is 115,368. The population of Jefferson County is approximately 535,000. Jefferson County is the largest county in Colorado. It extends into the mountains. The area of the city of Arvada is 39.39 square miles ("Arvada, Co," n.d.). The average age of the citizens in Arvada is 40.9. The median household income is $70,950. The average home price in Arvada is $382,992, and the average monthly rent is $1,333. Jefferson county has an unemployment rate of 3%, the national unemployment rate is 4.8% (Community report, n.d.). As I drove through the west side of Arvada, I saw many open spaces, dog parks, bike paths. The west side of town is a more affluent area. The houses had plenty of space between them, good lighting in the streets. As I drove further into town, I saw more apartment buildings, and the houses and buildings were closer together. There were more gas stations and small retail stores. The streets did not appear as clean or well-maintained as on the West side of town. On the westside of town there are community centers that provide swimming pools, exercise classes, hockey and ice skating rinks. I did not see anything like that as I drove further into town. (C1) Health Inequity/Disparity Every year Jefferson County does a study to see how many homeless people they have living in their community. In 2016, the number of homeless people in Jefferson County was 208. That number increased to 394 in 2017 (cityofarvada, 2017). This number is not necessarily reflective of the actual number of homeless people in Jefferson County. There are people who move around. They may sleep on friends’ couches for a period then move on to another friend’s house. This group of people is not accounted for in the Jefferson County survey. The survey only counts the visible homeless. Those people who are seen under bridges or in homeless camps. It does not count those families who are homeless moving from couch to couch. Currently, the city of Arvada has few services for the homeless. There are churches like the Rising Church that provides day shelters for the homeless. There is a network of churches that provide transportation to church shelters, the community food bank, and the Jefferson County mental health services and detox. The Rising Church has a doctor and nurse practitioner to help screen people. Arvada does not have a permanent homeless shelter in place, but it does have emergency shelters set up. There is a network of churches that serve as warming sites. They open when the temperature gets down to 20 degrees in dry weather, and 30 degrees in wet weather. The underlying cause of homelessness in Jefferson County and the city of Arvada is the lack of affordable housing. The city of Arvada first started noticing the problem with
