Final Lecture – End, Conclusions
Humans suffer from a dreadful condition...We crave:
Simple answers to inherently complex problems
Duffey and Pookin (2011):
Poti and Popin (2011): Trends in energy intake among US children by eating location and food source.
, Lin et al. (1998):
American adolescents consumed 30% and preschoolers 18% of meals outside home.
Fast food restaurants accounted for half of these meals.
Putnam and Allshouse (1999):
In America 46% of food expenditure spent on food consumed outside home.
34% of food expenditure on fast foods.
French et al. (2001):
Use of fast food restaurants positively associated with total energy intake and percent of energy from fat.
Also negatively associated with fruit/vegetable intake.
Scientific Evidence
Double-blind, placebo controlled, random allocation to conditions
Correlations/epidemiology
Case studies
Placebo randomly controlled blind trials:
How can a diet be blind?
How can you allocate a person to a diet?
Can you consider long-term effects?
