I. Course: NSG 204 – Introduction to the Profession of Nursing II. Semester: Fall 2025 III. Pre-requisites: ABSN – See Pre-admission requirements IV. Co-requisites: NSG 303 & NSG 303A V. Course Description: This course introduces students to the history and development of nursing as a profession. Key leaders will be studied including those who address the theoretical basis for nursing research and patient care, those who pioneered the development of organizations that provide oversight and standards of nursing. Key aspects of the profession of nursing; code of ethics, scope of practice, professionalism and role requirements will be discussed. Nurses as members of an inter-professional community to address optimal patient care and outcomes will be examined. IX. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. Articulate the importance and role of theory as it relates to nursing, research and the contribution to improving patient care in the community and tertiary settings. [BSN Essentials: VI; QSEN Competencies: 2; SLOs: 6] 4. Discuss the role of the nurse as a member of the healthcare team, code of nursing ethics and scope of practice for generalist nursing.
