Acceleration - Answer: A short-term increase in the heart rate of a fetus.



Accidental Bowel Leakage - Answer: Loss of control of the bowels. This condition can lead to

Adenocarcinoma - Answer: Cancer that starts in glandular tissue, such as the lining of the
uterus.



Adenomyosis - Answer: A condition that causes the tissue lining the uterus to grow into the
muscle wall of the uterus.



Adhesions - Answer: Scars that can make tissue surfaces stick together.



Alpha-fetoprotein - Answer: A protein normally made by a fetus or in the liver, ovaries, or
testicles. AFP can be found in amniotic fluid and in the blood during pregnancy. High levels
outside of pregnancy may be a sign of cancer



Amenorrhea - Answer: The absence of menstrual periods during the reproductive years.



Amniocentesis - Answer: A procedure that uses a needle to take uid and cells from the sac that

any chromosome, including the sex chromosomes. Down syndrome (trisomy 21) is a common
aneuploidy. Others are Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) and Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18).



Anterior Vaginal Wall Prolapse - Answer: Bulging of the bladder into the vagina. Also called a
cystocele.
