Create a portfolio of 10 poems, each showcasing a different form of poetry as outlined
in your study material. Your portfolio should demonstrate your understanding and
mastery of various poetic structures and your ability to infuse creativity and personal
expression within these forms. Please refer to the online study material before
attempting to answer the questions.
Guidelines:
• Ensure each poem reflects the specific characteristics and rules of its form.
• Infuse personal creativity and voice into each piece.
• Focus on crafting vivid imagery and emotional depth.
• There is no strict word limit, but each poem should adhere to its respective form
and syllabic or metrical requirements.
Requirements:
• Free Verse: Compose 2 poems in different variations of free verse (iambic,
cadenced, or freeverse proper).
• Haiku: Write 2 haikus, focusing on nature and employing the traditional 5-7-5
syllablestructure.
• Tanka: Craft 1 tanka poem, blending natural imagery with personal emotion,
using the 5-7-5-7-7 structure.
• Cinquain: Create 1 cinquain, adhering to the 2-4-6-8-2 syllable pattern.
• Quatrain: Write 1 quatrain using one of the rhyme schemes (ABCB, AABB,
ABAB,AAAB/AABA) in iambic pentameter.
• Sonnet: Develop 1 sonnet (Shakespearean or Petrarchan), exploring a theme
beyondtraditional love or beauty.
• Terza Rima: Compose 1 terza rima poem with a narrative arc, using the ABA,
BCB, CDCrhyme scheme.
• Villanelle: Craft 1 villanelle, integrating refrains creatively in the
aba/aba/aba/aba/aba/abaastructure.
• Sestina: Create 1 sestina, employing six specific words in the complex
repeating patternunique to this form.
• Imbongi (Praise Poem): Write 1 imbongi in honour of a significant figure, using
elements ofrepetition, metaphor, and allusion.
