NMQ 745 Chapter 2 – Intro to the language of research
Research = one of many different ways of knowing or understanding a process of systematic
inquiry that is designed to collect, analyse, interpret and use data.
2.2 Concept map
- A concept map serves as a heuristic that demonstrates the meaning of a limited set of key
concepts and relationships between them.
- often organised hierarchically with the larger concepts at the top and flowing out to
subsidiary concepts. Note also that there are linking terms like “consisting of” that further
enrich the meaning of concepts and their interrelationships.
2.3 Generating a concept map of key research terms
Research terms
Participant Integrated approach
Quantitative research Quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest
Statistical significance control group designespondent
Qualitative research True experiment
Practical significance Inferential statistics
Random sampling Quasi-experiment(al)
Population Crystallisation
Stratified sampling Correlation
Sample Ethnography
Validity Generalisability
Variables Independent variable
Reliability Narrative inquiry
Dependent variable
Experimental study Interviews
Descriptive statistics Survey
