This portfolio explores the seven official roles of educators as outlined by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET, 2015). These roles include being a specialist in a phase, subject, discipline, or practice; a learning mediator; an interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials; a leader, administrator, and manager; a scholar, researcher, and lifelong learner; an assessor; and finally, a community, citizenship, and pastoral role. Together, these roles provide a holistic view of what it means to be a teacher in a democratic and transforming education system. The portfolio consists of three major components. The first is a literature review, which defines and explains each role from a theoretical perspective with support from academic sources. The second includes interviews with practising teachers, where their lived experiences and practices are presented to show how these roles are enacted in real school environments. The third is personal reflections, which allow me to consider what these roles mean for my own development as a future teacher and how I plan to apply them in practice.
