, Lecture 1, Part 1: Aims and goals of orthopedic odontology
Introduction to prosthodontics
• Definition
◦ Scope of prosthodontics covers diagnosis, clinic, prevention and restoration of defects of teeth clinical
crowns and dental arches resulted by pathological processes
◦ It ranges from restoration of single tooth to rehabilitation of occlusion
◦ Prothetic restorations mainly are indirect and made in a dental laboratory
• Indirect restorations (made in laboratory)
◦ Fixed prosthesis
‣ Crowns
‣ Inlays/onlays
‣ Fixed partial dentures = Bridges
‣ Veneers = Cemented restorations
◦ Prosthetic appliances - Permanently attached to remaining teeth or their structure
◦ Removable prosthesis
‣ Partial dentures
‣ Full dentures
Defects of teeth clinical crowns
• Intracoronal restorations:
◦ Partial crown
Defect in the mouth Restoration on model Cemented restoration in the mouth
◦ Inlay/onlay
Restoration on the model Cemented restoration in the mouth
Single tooth coverage (Single full crown)
• Restores form and function of clinical crown, also integrity of dental arch
Tooth prepared for coverage PFM crown on the model PFM crown in the mouth
