QUESTION 1
1.1 Explain the difference between "growth" and "development" in the context
of child development.
Growth refers to the physical changes in the body, such as increase in height,
weight, and size, that occur as a child matures. It is mainly a biological process and
can be measured quantitatively e.g. in kilograms or centimetres)
Development, on the other hand, is a broader, continuous process of change,
maturation, and learning that starts at conception and continues until death. It
encompasses physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and moral aspects, enabling
individuals to cope with life’s challenges and function effectively in society.
Development involves qualitative improvements in abilities, skills, and behaviour
(CAD1501/1, p.3)
1.2 Comparison of collectivist and individualist cultures in terms of child
development
1.2.1 Definitions
Collectivist cultures emphasise that an individual’s life belongs to the group or
community. The individual is expected to act in the group’s best interest, prioritising
collective goals over personal ones. Examples include cultures in China, India,
Japan, and many African societies (CAD1501/1, p.7).
Individualist cultures prioritise the rights, goals, and choices of the individual. People
are encouraged to live life according to personal values and to be independent.
Examples include the United States, Germany, and Australia
