Describe and explain the purpose and application of IoT
systems and/or services from different sectors.
Purpose of IoT Systems
Internet of Things (IoT) systems can make the users life easier as well as improve
productivity in companies by providing a myriad of features to the user. They involve a
number of technologies to link small devices together to provide real time data useful to
someone e.g. a Ring door camera showing who is at the door or a set of alarm sensors
and cameras showing if someone is breaking into a building by using a motion sensor to
detect intruders and then send a notification to the owner and/or police as well with the
footage. As another example, a diabetic person who is low on sugar may have an IoT
device, like the Freestyle Libre in their arm which monitors their blood sugar and if it
drops too low, then it notifies a doctor.

Purpose Description
Productivity IoT devices can be used to enhance productivity by reducing the
amount of work required by the employees and thus reducing the
time taken to complete a task, e.g. looking at camera in a factory
at night remotely rather than having to drive to the factory which
means they do not need to waste as much time driving back.
Furthermore, IoT devices, such as a ClimateSmart™ Direct, can
also be used to enhance productivity by helps farmers collects soil
and weather data from IoT soil sensors in the ground. This is
useful in more than just one sector, such as the agriculture sector
where the water and mineral contents of the soil can be
automatically checked. This lets the farmers automatically water
and fertilise their farms and thus greatly reduce the amount of
time spent on the crops whilst also letting them scale their farm up
massively due to not needing to measure nor walk over to the
farms.
Another example is the use of location trackers by parcel delivery
companies to see where their drivers are currently located. An
example is RAM Tracking using the ThinkWare device for parcel
deliveries. They can add new parcel pickup locations or change
delivery details like leaving a parcel with a neighbour making life
easier for customers.
Safety and IoT devices can improve the safety and security of anything by
Security functioning as a device such as, a burglar alarm or CCTV. An
example of this would be, the Ring doorbell, which can see if
someone is trying to sneak around a house and then send a
notification to the owner and/or police with footage of the
intruders.
