What Is Personality?
“The underlying causes within the person of individual behaviour and experience”
Examples:
High on extraversion → sociable, outgoing
Shy type → lower on extraversion continuum
Describing Personality
1. Types
Qualitative, categorical: you either are or aren’t that type
Based on historical theories like Hippocrates’ four humours
Example: DSM diagnostic categories
2. Traits
Quantitative: traits lie on a continuum
E.g. shy (very shy), conscientious (moderately conscientious)
Everyone has each trait to some degree
