What is the relationship that Adela has with her sister Angustias? In
what ways is she different from her?

Quizás, a

In “The House of Bernarda Alba”, it could be said that Adela and
Angustias are two sides of the same story. It seems to be that Adela is the
opposite of her elder sister, and both sisters hate each other because of
jealousy. However, it’s vital that we remember that both women love Pepe
because they see him as an opportunity to leave their oppressive house.
Perhaps, through the sisters’ differences and similarities, and their
relationships with Pepe el Romano, Lorca wanted to demonstrate that any tipe
of woman can be destroyed by masculine power.

obra. Su relación gira alrededor de esta envidia.

It’s possible that Adela and Angustias are the most different sisters
within the family. As a result, it’s inevitable that a great conflict occurs between
them during the play. For example, Angustias is the oldest sister, considered
sickly and ugly by her family. On the other hand, Adela is said to be a great
beauty, the youngest, and has the hope of youth. That’s why the sisters are so
jealous of Adela. However, Adela is jealous too. At the start of the play,
Angustias has just inherited the inheritance of her stepfather. Angustias is not
only rich, but also wears Pepe el Romano’s engagement ring, who loves
Adela. If Angustias were the first daughter of the deceased father, this
wouldn’t be surprising. However, she’s the only daughter from Bernarda’s first
marriage. Therefore, two different men have chosen Angustias instead of
Adela: her father and her lover. In this way, it’s clear that Lorca wanted to
highlight that they are very different women. This is the reason that they are
more and more jealous during the play. Their relationship circles around this
envy.
