Tension Between the Sisters


●​ The sisters’ relationship revolves around hatred, especially with the
envy caused by Pepe el Romano.
○​ La relación entre las hermanas gira alrededor del odio,
especialmente con la envidia causada por Pepe el Romano.
●​ The atmosphere of hatred created by Bernarda’s oppressive command
makes the daughters turn against each other.
○​ El clima de odio creado por el mandato opresivo de Bernarda
hace que las hermanas se vuelvan en contra de sí.
●​ The relationship between the five sisters is the heart of the play, through
which Lorca explores the themes of passion, repression, and freedom.
○​ Las relaciones entre las cinco hermanas son el corazón de la
obra, a través de las cuales Lorca explora los temas de pasión,
represión y libertad.
●​ It’s evident that there is significant envy directed towards Angustias
because of her money and her relationship with Pepe el Romano.
○​ Es evidente que hay envidia considerable hacia Angustias por su
dinero y por su relación con Pepe.
●​ When the sisters talk about Pepe and his intention to marry Angustias,
Magdalena says “Neither of you two are happy” to Martirio and Amelia
(showing jealousy).​
○​ Cuando hablan de Pepe y su intención de casarse con Angustias
- Magdalena dice “Ninguna de las dos os alegráis” a Martirio y
Amelia (demostrando los celos).
●​ The jealousy between the sisters is clear in several ways. For example,
Magdalena says to Angustias: “you, who are the richest, you can keep
everything”. This shows the significance of money and status in the
house.

ejemplo, Magdalena dice a Angustias: “tú, que eres la más rica,
te puedes quedar con todo.”. Esto demuestra la importancia del
dinero y estatus en la casa.
●​ The sisters (especially Martirio) are also jealous of Adela for her youth
and beauty.
○​ Las hermanas (especialmente Martirio), están celosas de Adela
por su juventud y su belleza.
●​ Martirio says “My blood isn’t the same as yours anymore” [ie. you are
no longer my sister] when she discovers that Pepe is in the stable. This
shows her jealousy, and the divisions that it is causing amongst the
family.
○​ Martirio dice “Mi sangre ya no es la tuya” [es decir, ya no eres mi
hermana] cuando descubre que Pepe está en el corral. Esto
demuestra sus celos, y las divisiones que esto está causando
entre la familia.
●​ Martirio’s jealousy and envy turn into hatred and violence when she
says “That was the end of Pepe el Romano” to Adela, suggesting that
Adela’s lover is dead. This leads to Adela’s death too.

violencia cuando dice “se acabó Pepe el Romano” a Adela,
