SECTION 1: BASIC UNDERSTANDING AND CONCEPTS

 QUESTION 1

1. Define the following terms in your own words:

1.1. Literacy

Literacy is the ability to read and write, but it also includes listening, speaking, visual understanding,
and social interaction. It involves using language to make meaning and communicate effectively in
various contexts. In today’s world, it also includes digital skills like sending texts or writing emails.
(CLY1501, 2023:p14)

1.2. Emergent literacy

Emergent literacy is the early stage of developing literacy skills, starting from birth before formal
schooling. It includes children's awareness of print, understanding that spoken words can be written,
and mimicking reading and writing behaviors seen in adults. This phase lays the foundation for
reading and writing development. (CLY1501, 2023:p14-15)

1.3. Genre

Genre refers to a category of literature defined by a specific form, content, and style. Common
genres include poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction. Each genre follows its own structure and
serves different purposes, helping learners to recognize and understand various text types. (CLY1501,
2023:p31)

1.4. Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism means recognizing and respecting the diverse cultural, racial, and linguistic
backgrounds of people in society. It opposes discrimination and promotes inclusion and equality. In
education, it encourages appreciation for differences and fosters a sense of belonging among all
learners. (CLY1501, 2023:p73)

1.5. Picture books

Picture books are books for children that use illustrations as the main method of storytelling, often
supported by minimal or no text. The images and text work together to convey meaning, sometimes
with the visuals telling the entire story. These books support imagination, comprehension, and
critical thinking. (CLY1501, 2023:p34)
