Question 1: Please provide information to support your application. You may want to include
the following: why do you want to study your chosen course? What research have you done to
ensure that this is the right course for you? What skills or experience do you have that will
help you to succeed on the course? How does your chosen course help you with your future
plans? (4000 characters)

The University of Law’s Bar Practice Course stands out to me due to the high-quality training that is
provided to students. The opportunity to be taught by legal practitioners and barristers serves as a
great opportunity to receive high-quality training and knowledge which would facilitate me in my
pursuit of becoming a barrister. Furthermore, the small class sizes offered as part of this course would
also prove to be beneficial in encouraging classroom discussion and providing opportunities to ask
questions. I believe that the professional expertise of the tutors and the high standard of training
offered by the University of Law would ultimately enhance my knowledge of the legal field, which
would give me the perfect opportunity to gain the high standard of professional training that I need to
pursue my career as a barrister.

One of the reasons as to why I wish to qualify as a barrister is so that I can make a positive impact on
those around me and make a difference to people’s lives. My previous experience interning at an
employment law firm stimulated my interest in pursuing a career within the legal sector, as it gave me
an insight into the important role lawyers play in helping the most vulnerable. Whilst interning at the
firm, I had the opportunity to carry out work shadowing, whereby I attended court hearings and sat in
on client meetings with my mentor. Having the opportunity to intern at the firm prior to starting my
education within the legal field gave me a great insight into how a law firm operates and the various
roles and responsibilities that lawyers have. Likewise, being able to witness the positive impact that
my mentor and other barristers at the firm were making to people’s lives furthered my interest in
pursuing a career within this field. Through representing and defending clients, the lawyers at the firm
were able to give a voice to those that were vulnerable within society in the face of injustice, and it is
for this reason that this career stands out to me.

Having previously participated in the Advocacy Society’s speed-mooting competition and making it
through to the semi-finals, I have further developed my advocacy and public speaking skills which I
believe would help me to succeed on this course. By taking part in the competition, I have been able
to build my confidence and improve my communication skills through debating and interacting with
others that were competing in the competition. Alongside taking part in these competitions, I have
regularly observed debating and speed mooting competitions as an audience member which has
given me an insight into how the court trails happen. Through observing these competitions as an
impartial audience member, this has enabled me to understand the strengths and weaknesses of
each contestant, thereby serving as an opportunity to improve upon my own advocacy skills.

Question 2: Please detail any mini-pupillages or other Bar related experiences that you have
undertaken. (1000 characters)

In my first year as an undergraduate, I had the opportunity to intern in a conveyancing law firm.
Having the opportunity to intern at the firm was extremely rewarding and gave an insight into how
law can be applied to real world scenarios and case studies. Due to the small size of the firm I was
able to network and interact with colleagues across different roles, which ranged from clerks and
secretaries to the junior counsels and senior firm partners. I was tasked with carrying out a range of
administrative duties as well as accompanying lawyers at court hearings which gave me a solid
overview of the opportunities available within the legal sector.

Alongside my experience interning at a law firm, I have also regularly participated in speed mooting
competitions that have been held by my university’s Advocacy Society. By participating in these
competitions, I was able to develop my advocacy and communication skills further by applying them
to scenarios outside of the core curriculum of my academic syllabus.
