In South Africa, many people live in places where bad things happen often. There is a
lot of crime. People get hurt, robbed, hijacked, or even killed. Sometimes children also
see these bad things happen around them. Even schools are not always safe. These
scary things can make people feel very sad, afraid, and angry. This is called trauma.
Trauma is what people feel when something very bad happens to them. It can be a car
accident, seeing someone get hurt, being shouted at all the time, or losing a family
member. Trauma makes people feel worried, scared, or unsafe, even when they are in
a safe place. It makes it hard to smile or feel happy again. Some people cry a lot, while
others stay very quiet. Trauma is very hard, especially for children.
