Timber is a widely used material in construction because it has many different applications such as
frames, floors, roofs and windows and doors. Timber has been used in construction for thousands of
years. It is used from the construction of sustainable timber frames that speed up the construction
process and maintain tradition but still benefit from modern construction technology. Timber is also
used in the construction of suspended floors and the floorboards. Timber is a good insulator of heat
ideal for flooring and suspended timber floors allow for air flow between the habitable area on top
of the floor and the foundation below. Roofs are often constructed from timber trusses, rafters and
battens. The trusses will generally be assembled offsite nowadays and then erected onsite. Once the
roof trusses are erected timber battens are installed and they will support the roof tiles. Occasionally
windows and doors are made from timber mainly for aesthetics. Timber is a good insulator and ideal
for doors and windows as long as they have been made waterproof.
