Endocarditis
,Introduction -
Infective endocarditis (IE) is a microbial infection of the heart
valves or other endocardial tissue, often associated with an
underlying cardiac defect.
IE used to be classified as either acute bacterial endocarditis
or sub acute bacterial endocarditis based on the clinical
present and course of the untreated disease.
, Types –
1) acute – more virulence , staph.aurues . Can occur in healthy
heart, high grade fever, destructive lesions ,.
2) sub acute – less virualnce , strept. Species , unhealthy heart (pre
disposing factors ) , low grade fever , slow destruction of cardiac
tissue
Causative organisms- st.viridance ,enterococci ,staph. Fungal
infections .
