Lesson Identification
The lesson I chose is an ELA Lesson at the third-grade level. The lesson is titled What a
Character and the lesson objective is for students to listen to, read, and view a variety of texts
and media that present them with information about bold, interesting characters . They will
show different ways for students to build their vocabulary and synthesize topic knowledge;
they will learn that each protagonist is a unique individual, just as
they are.
Drawing or Summarizing
I can integrate drawing into this lesson to improve student understanding by having them
draw a picture of something or someone they think makes up a character. This exit ticket shows
the student's understanding of the lesson. The pictures could include words, descriptions, labels,
or whatever they want to describe what they think makes up a character. In Benassi, it says that
this supports comprehension and problem-solving. (Benassi et al., 2014; Dunlosky et al., 2013;
Pashler et al., 2007).
Questioning Techniques
I integrate questioning techniques into my classroom to improve student understanding and
sharpen their comprehension/comprehension of vocabulary while teaching throughout the unit.
When walking around and making observations throughout the lesson, I can hear the chatter
about the lesson and all the great ideas leading forward from the question they are answering
from elbow partner to elbow partner. The questions will never be so out of reach for the students;
this challenges their thinking of the story we just read or the vocabulary word we just learned.
The questions I need to ask the students need to be specific areas we are currently working on.
