Endocrine System
A series of glands and tissues that produce and secrete hormones
- Used to regulate and coordinate vital bodily functions
Hormones: excreted into extracellular fluids and travel in the blood stream
to help regulate metabolic functions in other body cells.
Target cells and organs
Hormones only act on specific target cells and bind to receptors specific to
the target cell
- They bring out the characteristics effect by altering the activity of
the target cell
Can increase or decrease the rate of cellular processes
, Communication in water-soluble hormones
Amino acid based
- Act and bind to the receptors on the plasma membrane
Hormones can’t pass through the PM therefore the receptors are on the
surface of target cells.
Examples: glycoproteins, catecholamines, peptide hormones
Communication in lipid soluble hormones
Act on the receptors inside the cell and interact with the cell’s DNA to
mediate action.
- Consist of steroids and thyroid hormones
Examples: thyroxine, aldosterone, cortisol, testosterone
Maintaining homeostasis
- The ability of the body to maintain a relatively stable internal
condition
Negative
