Topic: Analyse Napoleon's tactics during the French invasion of Egypt and
discuss how these tactics reflect the ideology of colonial conquest.

Part 1: Essay Introduction

In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte took soldiers into Egypt. He wanted to stop Britain
from using important trade routes and make France stronger in the East. This
was not just a fight, it was a plan to take control of Egypt. Napoleon wanted to
show that France was smart and powerful. He said he came to help the Egyptian
people from bad rulers called the Mamluks, but he also used violence and tricks
to take over.Napoleon brought smart people, like scientists and writers, to learn
about Egypt. They studied and wrote things down. This helped France
understand Egypt better and made it easier to control. French soldiers stayed in
big cities and ports to show their power and keep order. Napoleon also talked to
local leaders to make it seem like he had their support. This is something many
colonisers did they used local people to help them rule. Napoleon tried to make it
look like he was bringing knowledge and light, but he was really trying to take
control. His actions show how powerful countries often said they were helping,
but they just wanted to take land, people, and resources. Napoleon’s invasion of
Egypt mirrored broader colonial ideologies of domination, resource extraction,
and cultural imposition..
