Analyzing Diverse Voices & Cultural Interactions

A. Analysis..from..List..A:..“I,..Too”..(1926)..by..Langston..Hughe
s..A1...Description
“I,..Too”..is..a..poem..written..by..Langston..Hughes..from..the..perspective..of..a..black..man..i
n..America...The..speaker..is..told..to..eat..in..the..kitchen..when..company..comes..because..he.
.is..black,..and..the..guests..and..owners..of..the..home..are..presumably..white...At..the..poem's..
end,..the..speaker..says..he..will..have..the..opportunity..to..sit..at..the..table,..and..no..one..woul
d..dare..say..anything..to..him...I..believe..this..poem..is..a..direct..protest..against..segregation..a
nd..racism..in..America...The..theme..of..this..poem..is..racism..and..his..wish..that,..in..the..futu
re,..black..Americans..will..be..treated..the..same..as..everybody..else..and..accepted..into..soci
ety.

A2...Historical..Events
The..poem..“I,..Too”..was..written..in..the..1920s...Jim..Crow..laws..(1877-..mid-
1960s)..were..still..active..and..ruled..everyday..life...These..laws..indicated..that..black..people
..were..inferior..to..white..people...Because..of..these..laws,..a..lot..of..violence..and..mistreatme
nt..were..allowed..toward..black..Americans...If..a..black..person..would..ever..dare..to..break..a.
.single..law,..they..would..risk..their..livelihood..or..even..their..life...This..poem..also..falls..in..t
he..“Great..Migration”..times..between..1916..and..1970...During..the..“Great..Migration,”..mi
llions..of..African..Americans..left..the..South..and..moved..to..the..Northeast...During..the..tim
e..the..migration..happened,..black..Americans..were..experiencing..discrimination..and..segre
gation..like..they..did..in..the..South...There..were..a..lot..of..“White..Only”..places,..and..the..sch
ools..were..segregated...Black..Americans..experienced..much..racism..during..the..1920s,..and..
that’s..why..I..think..this..poem..was..written.
