Introduction to Law for Social Work IIA

Question 1

In our daily lives, people often use the word “law” in different ways. Some might say “it’s
against the law” when someone breaks a rule, or “the law says so” when they want to
prove a point. But in a legal sense, “the law” means the set of rules made by the
government or a recognised authority that all people in a country must follow. These
rules help keep order in society, protect people’s rights, and ensure that there is
fairness when problems come up.

For example, traffic laws say we must stop at red robots (traffic lights) – that’s the law.
Another example is the law that says stealing is a crime, and if you’re caught stealing,
you can be punished in court. So, the law in its legal sense refers to rules made by
lawmakers and enforced by the courts to guide how people behave and to keep
everyone safe and treated fairly.

Question 2

When we talk about a “legal subject”, we’re talking about a person or organisation that
can have rights and duties in the eyes of the law. This includes people like you and me,
as well as companies or businesses. A legal subject can, for example, own property,
sign contracts, or be taken to court.
