Bookreport ‘The Rosie effect’

MIJS VAN RENS
VWO6 RAAYLAND
COLLEGE

,A Expectations and first reaction
I really like reading books so I was very excited to read another English book. It is also more
challenging to read English books, because it is obviously a different language. That's why I enjoy
reading English books so much, because it helps me expand my vocabulary and it also helps me
understand the English language better.

I chose a book last year that I found on the internet on a reading list. This year, I went to the library
and just started looking at different books. Then I found the book ´The Rosie effect´, the cover already
really appealed to me, but it was a very thick book. As I said, I really like reading, but I don't have a lot
of time because of school. But I chose this book anyway because the text on the back really appealed
to me and the letters were a bit larger than they usually are.

The author is Graeme Simsion and I was not yet familiar with him. I did not recognize his name, so I
also had no expectations about his writing style or genre type. I also had no idea that this book was a
follow-up to an earlier book that is called ‘The Rosie project’.

The Rosie effect is a romance fictional book and usually I don’t read these types of books, but this
time the book just really appealed to me and I felt like reading it. I usually read thrillers, so this book
is really the opposite, but again that makes it really fun because I read something different for once.

I did not know the author, so I did not know what to expect from this book in terms of writing style
and genre, but I naturally had expectations of my own besides this. My expectation was that it would
be an easy read. This was my only expectation and this turned out to be the case. It was an easy read,
very long though, so to read the book at a stretch I don't recommend that.

, Summary
Don Tillman and Rosie Jarman have now been married for a year and they live together in a small flat
in New York. When they moved in together, Don wanted to bring as little stuff as possible, but Rosie
is a real collecting freak. So Rosie ended up bringing almost all her stuff anyway.

It is June and Don is about to tell Rosie that his friend Gene is coming to New York. Gene is in a
divorce with his wife Claudia and would like to come to Don. But Rosie and Gene don't get along, so
Don is curious to hear Rosie's reaction.

Before he can say anything, Rosie announces she is pregnant. Don did not expect this and becomes
stressed. He runs out of the flat and gets into a minor conflict with his neighbor. He then runs to his
friend Dave. Once he arrives, he talks to Dave and his pregnant wife Sonia and calms down a bit and
goes home.

Don helps Dave with his business. Dave is working on a beer cellar for George. Meanwhile, he is also
dealing with all the medical-scientific details about Rosie's pregnancy. Eventually Don tells Gene that
he is coming and Rosie absolutely does not want this. In addition, they are also told that they will
probably have to move out of their flat because of the conflict between Don and the neighbor. And
on top of that, he also gets fired from his side job as a bartender for insulting a customer.

Don cancels their rent and moves all their stuff into the new flat where George lets them live for free
without Rosie knowing. Don and Rosie are allowed to live here as long as Don takes care of the beer
cellar. Rosie is very excited, but soon starts talking about the baby again. Don gets stressed again
because of an incident that happened earlier. Don went out to dinner with friends of his own. He was
called an autistic person by those friends (Lydia) and they told him definitely not to have children.
This still bothers him a lot, but Rosie knows nothing about this.

Gene arrives in New York and moves in with Don and Rosie. Gene advises don to research
fatherhood. Don goes to a playground to observe children but is caught by the police there. He is
allowed to return home as usual and does not tell Rosie anything about this. Don does have to go to
a psychological examination by the police. Here he meets Lydia again, who tells Don that Rosie might
be depressed because of the pregnancy and that Don is partly responsible for this. Don has to attend
a follow-up interview with Rosie, but he doesn’t want to cause Rosie extra stress, so he asks Sonia to
play Rosie.

Don is busy delving into fatherhood and making nutrition plans for Rosie. Rosie who is busy working
on her PhD has no appetite for this at all.

Don is put on a research project that deals with the influence of parents on children's development
and with this he might learn more about fatherhood. He lets babies crawl all over him and plays with
them. He also joins Dave in looking for a fathers' group to talk to in order to gain information.

Rosie starts to get increasingly annoyed by Don's behavior. Don interferes too much with Rosie
because, in his opinion, her behavior is irresponsible. Rosie's sleep rhythm is very disturbed by the
pregnancy. Don just wants to be able to continue sleeping and temporarily goes to sleep in the study.
Don goes with Dave, Gene and George to a vet to assist with a calf birth. To get more information
before giving birth to Rosie. Gene confesses that he lied and did not cheat with several women and
Dave tells him that he is not the real father of Sonia's baby but that they used a sperm donor. and
George confesses that he caused his son to become a drug addict.
