Special Tips for Immunology
(I plan on adding new tips each exam to help you succeed)

Module 1
1. Watch the complement videos at least twice, preferably BEFORE lecture. Exams 1, 2, 5, and 6
will have complement on it and they typically comprise of about 20-30% of those exams. Review
this concept weekly.
2. Prof. Weigel will not provide you with a study guide for Module 1. This is because Module 1 is
the foundation for the rest of the course and he wants you to essentially know all this information.
Organize this into flashcards or create some sort of chart to remember the different types of
leukocytes, differences between innate and adaptive immunity, etc.
3. Speaking of leukocytes, Weigel will ask some variation of “Are all leukocytes lymphocytes” on
EVERY exam. And every exam will have less than 50% of students choosing the right answer.
Remember: All lymphocytes are leukocytes, but not all leukocytes are lymphocytes.”
4. You will notice a lot of words on the slides. Don’t worry: Not all of these words are important. If
Prof. Weigel references something on the slide, you can almost guarantee it will be somewhere on
the exam.
5. Also take note of words that are highlighted in yellow and red. Those are also going to be
important information that you will need to know.
6. If Prof. Weigel tells you not to worry about something (or says he won’t test you on something),
don’t worry about it. Immunology is already confusing enough.
7. Do practice problems and practice exams. I will post a practice exam on my WordPress and
Weigel will post his on the Webcourses. Do them. Sometimes, he’ll put those questions on the
real exam (not always, but you’d be surprised).
8. Re-watch the lecture recordings even if you go to class. There are certain things that he
emphasizes in his lectures that you might miss the first time around.
9. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Immunology has to start somewhere. And as you learn more
material, you’ll start to understand and make more connections.
10. Module exams 1-5 are 51 questions and consist of multiple choice, true-or-false, and matching.
The maximum number of points you can get is 102/100.
11. Don’t forget syllabus stuff. He likes to ask at least one syllabus question on each exam (which is
why I include it on my exam review).
12. Speaking of which, go to my exam reviews. I don’t plan on posting the answers, but I will go
over the answers during those sessions. I’ve been told by many students last semester that it was
extremely helpful, so try to attend if possible.
