Bronze Cross & Bronze Medallion Questions
and Answers| Latest Update

How do you enter the pool before performing a spinal turnover? You must slip-in very
slowly. The goal of this entry is to the least amount of waves or movements in the water as
possible, so that the victim's injury doesn't escalate any further.

Kinds of spinal turnovers Canadian, Modified and Vice grip

Spinal turnovers: Canadian - Grab both of the victim's arms (around the bicep area)

- Squeeze both arms against the victim's head

Spinal turnovers: Modified - Take both hands and place them through the victim's arms.

- Place both your hands firmly against the victim's head (near their ears).

- Put your face cheek-to-cheek with the victim's face (your face must be going underwater)

- Now, turnover with the victim so that you are still cheek-to-cheek and that both your faces are
out of water.

Spinal turnovers: Vice - Position your left hand so that it lies straight over the victim's
head and back, while your right hand goes through the victim's right arm (Assuming you are a
righty. If you are a lefty, simply do the opposite).

, - Once you think you have positioned your hands correctly, place them on the victim. Your left
hand should be holding the victim's head while your right hand should hold the victim's jaw.
(MAKE SURE YOU PLACE BOTH HANDS AT THE SAME TIME, AND HAVE A TIGHT GRIP).

- Now, go cheek-to-cheek with the victim's face (your face must be going underwater)

- Finally, turnover with the victim so that you are still cheek-to-cheek and that both your faces
are out of water.

Unconscious turnover Simply place a life jacket around the victim, and flip them over so
that their face is out of water. (Cheek-to-cheek is not required).

Heimlich maneuver 1. Begin to encourage the victim to cough.

2. If the person stops coughing, ask if you can help them and wait for some kind of nod of
approval.

3. Get in back of them and place one of your legs firmly to ground in between the victim's two
legs (incase they fall).

4. Place both thumbs at their hips and use your index finger to locate their bellybutton.

5. Once you find their bellybutton, form a fist with one hand and cover it with the other.

6. Now begin to perform j-thrusts upwards until the victim coughs up what he/she has been
chocking on.
