Chapter 16
*Please note that I have worked directly from the module outcomes as well
as the module textbook*
1. Identify a combined approach to the treatment of abnormal
behaviour.
- The biopsychosocial model/ approach (replaced clinical medical
view to health) promotes a multifaceted integration of biological
(general medical conditions, genetic predispositions, neurological,
biological and cognitive impairments), psychological (impact mental
state including emotional turmoil, self-esteem, coping skills, external
locus of control and traumatic) and social influences (individual’s
family, interpersonal relationships, poverty, education, culture) on
mental health.
2. Identify the three major categories of therapy.
- An individual comes to a therapist with a presenting problem
(manifestation of pathology) or chief complain (person’s account of
experiences). The therapist then collects information to provide a
working diagnosis of the patient. The therapist then uses a treatment
method.
Insight Therapies Talk therapy. Client engages with the therapist
in a complex verbal interaction to pursue
increased insight regarding the nature of the
problems and to find a possible solution. This
can be conducted with an individual or a group.
Freud’s psychoanalysis, client-centred, group/
family therapy.
Behaviour Therapies Focusses on principles of learning and not
personal insights. The therapist makes direct
efforts to alter the problematic responses and
maladaptive habits in order to change the
client’s overt behaviours.
Psychopharmacology Focusses on a person’s biological functioning
and uses drug therapy or electroconvulsive
therapy. This is normally used by psychiatrists.
