Special Education Department Workshop Outline

I. Characteristics of gifted and talented learners in Florida:

A. Definition of gifted: Rule 6A-6.03019, FAC. Superior intellectual development

and is capable of high performance. A team reviews assessment findings and is

motivated to find under-represented populations who can benefit (Florida

Department of Education, 2019)

B. Parent(s), general education teachers, or other community members or even the

student may nominate the student-evidence of rapidly acquiring new information,

synthesizing information, recall, self-motivated/interested. Screenings also take

into account existing data and information about the student. The student is

interviewed, assessments are reviewed, and portfolio is evaluated.

II. Testing and monitoring:

A. IQ is one determinative factor, with a score of 130 (two standard deviations above

the mean) qualifying a student.

B. State provides methods for screening intended to increase identification of

students for gifted services for all populations K-12.
