The Kapp Putsch
 Wolfgang Kapp tried to take over Germany (right-wing)
 March 1920 – 5000 men (from the Free Corps) took over the capital city.
o This was known as the Kapp Putsch
 Kapp aimed to take over the whole country, regain empire and build army
 The government fled from Berlin
 The workers did not support Kapp and went on strike
o No gas, water etc.
 Kapp fled abroad after 100 hours as leader and previous government
returned


Red Rising in the Ruhr
 After Kapp fled, left-wing workers stayed on strike and took over towns in
the Ruhr
 Free Corps sent to deal with the Red Rising – over 1000 workers were
killed


Assassinations
 Some used terror tactics and assassinated politicians who accepted the
Treaty of Versailles
o Between 1919 and 1922, there were over 350 assassinations –
mainly by right wing extremists
 Aug 1921 – Matthias Erzberger (the man who signed the
Treaty) was shot dead by a right wing group
 Many of the right-wing murderers got short sentences
(4 years)




Putsch – the attempt to seize power to take control using force
Red Rising – the left-wing voters’ revolt in March 1920, in the Ruhr region
of Germany
