Scenario #1
The surgical center I work for requires each patient to bring a responsible person with
them. The responsible person signs an agreement to drive the patient home and take care
of the patient for 24 hours after surgery. A patient come in for surgery that brought her
boyfriend with her. The patient wanted to see her boyfriend before she went to surgery.
We called the boyfriend, but he did not answer. The patient asked us to see if he was in his
car. A nurse went out to the car and reported back to the nurse manager. The nurse said:
“When the boyfriend opened the car door, a lot of marihuana smoke came out of the car.”
At this point the patient’s boyfriend was in the room with the patient. The nurse manager
entered the patient room and had to let the patient know that surgery will need to be
rescheduled. The patient got mad and asked the nurse “Why do I need rescheduled?” The
nurse manager replied:” Your boyfriend is under the influence. We live in North Carolina
and marihuana is illegal. He is supposed to be responsible for you, but he was not able to
answer the phone.
We are not able to do surgery because he is under the influence and we are legally not
allowed to let you leave with him after anesthesia.” The patient was very mad at her
boyfriend but agreed to reschedule the surgery.
Skill Application #1
Opportunity Statement
The current undesirable situation is that the patient that was supposed to have surgery
does not have a reliable person to take care of her after surgery because he is under the
influence of an illegal substance.
The problem being experienced is that the surgery has to be cancelled for today and
rescheduled for another time. This both inconveniences the patient and the surgical center.
The changes to be made and the desired result of the changes will be that the patient will
be effectively communicated to about the importance of having a reliable support person
to take care of her after surgery. She will receive this information and she will find a
reliable support person. The clinic will reschedule her appointment at this time.
Social and Emotional Power Skill - Self-Awareness
The power skill that the nurse manager should use in this scenario is self-awareness. To
capitalize on self-awareness, the nurse manager shows empathy to the patient and the
situation (WGU, n.d.). The nurse manager understands that this is not the fault of the
patient and that the patient is very upset and frustrated with the situation, but not angry at
the nurse manager. The nurse manager is sensitive to the patient’s feelings and tries to find
a good solution. The nurse manager shows no judgment to the patient or boyfriend. To
resolve the issue, the clinic will have to reschedule her appointment for another day. This
situation needs to be handled with care and understanding by the nurse manager.
Strength- Active listening and compassion
The strengths that I would use in this scenario are active listening and compassion.
Listening to the patient with an open mind and without judgement will allow for the
patient to see that I am trying to help her. I would show compassion and understanding for
the patient’s situation. In return the patient will calm down and be understanding towards
