Enquiry Question 2: What are the consequences for people
and the environment of our increasing demand for energy?
, 6.4 Energy security is a key goal for countries, with most relying on fossil fuels.
There are many different sources of energy which can be classified into:
Non-renewable - will run out
Renewable - will not run out
Recyclable - reprocessing radioactive elements and heat recovery systems
Non-Renewable Renewable Recyclable
Oil Solar
Coal Wind
Gas Hydroelectric Nuclear
Oil sands Wave Biofuels
Oil shales Tidal
Shale gas Geothermal
Primary energy is an energy form found in nature that has not been subjected to any
conversion or transformation process. It is contained in raw fuels. Primary energy can be
non-renewable or renewable.
Secondary energy is one that is made using a primary source. Electricity is a secondary
resource and can be generated by a number of different primary sources.
Domestic energy is energy sources within a nation's borders.
Foreign energy is imports of primary and secondary energy from other countries, eg: oil
from Saudi Arabia, electricity via a channel connector from France.
Oil - transport, increased cars/air travel - rise of the middle class
