Enquiry Question 2: Why might regeneration be needed?
, 4A.4 Economic and social inequalities change people's perception of an area.
Lived experience is the accumulated experience of living in a particular place. This place can
have a profound impact on a person's perceptions, values and identity of the place.
Place attachment is the emotional bond between person and place. It is highly influenced
by a person's lived experience and how long they have resided there.
The economic and social inequalities that lie rooted in employment and different levels of
income affect people's perceptions of places.
The perception of residents in such places may differ according to the type and position of
people and their needs and aspirations:
Younger people in high earning jobs will enjoy the fast pace of life and range of
opportunities offered in London and Manchester.
Retirees may view places offering a slower pace of life with a pleasant climate;
sheltered accommodation and good access to healthcare are successful, eg: Torquay
and Dorset.
Unskilled people, lower earners and the long term unemployed will have more
negative views.
Factors That Influence People's Perceptions of the Success of a Place:
Quality of housing
House prices
Crime rate
Environmental quality
